San Evaristo: The Wild Coast by Land & Sea
A three-day overland & marine journey into Baja's wild coast, from the desert mountains near La Paz to the remote fishing community of San Evaristo
Itinerary
Day 1
The Road to San Evaristo
The journey begins in La Paz and heads north toward San Evaristo.
As we leave the city behind, the road becomes progressively more remote, opening into a landscape shaped by desert, mountains, beaches, and the Sea of Cortez.
The drive itself is an essential part of the expedition.
There is no rush to simply reach San Evaristo. Opportunities to stop, photograph, explore, and experience places encountered along the route are part of what defines the journey.
Paved roads eventually give way to remote coastal tracks as we continue north.
Arrival in San Evaristo
Arrival in the small fishing community of San Evaristo and check-in at our accommodation.
The evening provides time to settle in, have dinner, explore the surroundings, and prepare for the following day's marine expedition.
Overnight in San Evaristo.
Day 2
07:00 — Breakfast
Begin the morning with breakfast in San Evaristo and prepare for a full day on the water.
Hydration, sun protection, and snorkeling equipment are checked before departure.
08:30 — Marine Expedition
We leave San Evaristo by boat for a full day exploring the surrounding waters.
The day's journey combines a marine safari, exploration around Isla San José, and snorkeling at El Pardito.
Rather than following a rigid sequence, the day adapts to weather, sea conditions, visibility, and marine-life activity.
The objective is simple: spend the day exploring one of the wildest marine environments along this stretch of the Sea of Cortez.
Isla San José
We explore the waters surrounding Isla San José, observing the changing landscape where mountains, desert geology, and sea meet.
Along the way, we remain alert for opportunities to observe and photograph marine wildlife. Wildlife encounters depend entirely on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
El Pardito
One of the day's key experiences is El Pardito, a small inhabited islet in the Sea of Cortez between San Francisco and Isla San José.
The island has been home to generations of the Cuevas family, creating a remarkable human presence within this remote marine landscape.
We stop here for snorkeling and marine exploration. Time in the water depends on sea conditions, visibility, currents, and group comfort.
16:00 — Return to San Evaristo
After a full day at sea, we return to San Evaristo.
There is time to shower, rest, organize equipment, and back up photographs and video from the day.
18:30 — Dinner
Dinner and time to recover after the marine expedition.
A relaxed evening in San Evaristo allows the group to slow down after spending most of the day on the water.
20:00 — Fire & Stars
As darkness settles over San Evaristo, we gather around the fire.
This is a moment to share stories from the day, review what we experienced, and enjoy one of the simplest pleasures of traveling through remote Baja: a dark sky filled with stars.
Overnight in San Evaristo.
Day 3
07:00 — Breakfast
Breakfast and preparation for departure.
We pack our belongings, check the rooms, organize equipment, and prepare for one final morning of exploration.
08:30 — San Evaristito
Before leaving San Evaristo, we explore San Evaristito, walking toward the beach through the area adjacent to the salt flats and local cemetery.
The walk offers another perspective of the landscape and community, with time for photography and quiet exploration.
The pace is moderate, with regular attention to hydration and weather conditions.
11:30 — Departure for La Paz
We begin the overland journey back toward La Paz.
As with the arrival route, the road remains part of the experience rather than simply a transfer between destinations.
12:30 — Arroyo Verde
We make a final coastal stop at Arroyo Verde.
Depending on currents, visibility, and sea conditions, there is an opportunity for snorkeling, swimming, photography, and one last experience in the water before returning to the road.
13:30 — The Road Home
We leave Arroyo Verde and continue toward La Paz.
The return remains flexible enough for brief photography and exploration stops whenever the landscape, wildlife, or light gives us a reason to stop.
17:00 — Arrival in La Paz
Estimated arrival in La Paz.
After three days moving through remote roads, fishing communities, islands, beaches, and the Sea of Cortez, we return to where the expedition began.
Three days. Desert roads, a remote fishing village, islands, open water, fire and stars — a different way to experience Baja California Sur.
